The Gita Jayanthi- Coding Event followed the Gita Jayanthi- Creative Writing Event on 26th December. Gita Jayanthi- Coding Event was KiddyPi’s one of a kind Online Workshop for the 6 to 16 years old learners. The event was a unique combination of computer programming and ‘Khagolshastra’ or astronomy in Sanskrit.

The coding challenges were built around the wonders of ‘Khagolshastra’ discovered by the great astronomers of ancient India.

In the event, we put coding challenges based on the formation of stars in the 12 masa or masam (months) of a year. Participants also learnt about festivals celebrated during different masa of Indian calendars with the help of coding!

Gita Jayanthi: Coding Event

The Coding Event was divided into junior (6 to 10 years old) and senior (11 to 16 years old) groups. The goals of the event were as follows:

• 1) To highlight the importance of Dhanurmasam (This year, Dhanurmasam began on 16th Dec, 2020 and will continue up to 14th Jan, 2021) in Indian Panchangam
• 2) To share interesting facts about Vikrama Samvasthara and Shaka Samvasthara.
• 3) To generate interests in young minds about the festivals celebrated in various masa of Indian calendars.
• 4) To learn about the constellations.

The last two activities were the themes of coding challenges.

a) The Coding Event for the Juniors

Juniors took part in a Scratch programming event that helped them learn more about various festivals celebrated across India as per the Indian calendars. Along the way, children also learnt about the 12 masa of the traditional Indian calendar e.g. Chaitra, Vishakha, Jestha, Asadha, Sravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwayuja, Karthika, Margasirsa/ Dhanur Masa, Pushya, Magha, Palghuna.

In the Scratch coding challenge, these masa were displayed as separate buttons. On clicking any of the buttons, a festival image, which is celebrated in that masa, would appear on the output screen. Likewise, on clicking all the 12 buttons, 12 festival images would appear, one by one.

b) The Coding Event for the Seniors

The Coding Event was built around the Python programming language. The highlights of the event were as follows:

• i) The importance of a calendar to humanity.
• ii) Some interesting facts about different types of calendars used by us, and how they came into existence.
• iii) A simple analogy between the months of Indian lunar calendar with that of the Gregorian solar calendar.
• iv) Draw different constellations using Python programming codes.
• v) Some interesting facts about Python programming.
• vi) The importance of constellations in the lives of people in the old days.
• vii) How constellations are related to different zodiac signs.

The participants were thrilled to program the constellations that represented their birth signs.

The session was extremely engaging, vibrant and full of fun. Everyone learnt about programming and also our rich Indian heritage.
